Memories of Reveille
A Class of 1968 grad reminisces on his time as a Rook in Band Company.
Reveille brings back, I say jokingly, fond memories of my time as a Rook in Band Company. After a short period of training, it was up to the rooks to play Reveille, Taps, and anything else required during the day.
The winter season of 1965 was below bitterly cold, and I had the assignment to play Reveille. Sixty degrees below zero. Not a windchill, but actual temperature. I was allowed to stay in the Officer of the Day's cubicle, warming my mouthpiece as much as possible, then dart out the door, blow the notes two or three times faster than usual, and hastily retreat before my trumpet froze to my face.
